When bad things happen...

How we respond to our children when they ask us about difficult subjects merits some pre-planning.  Nobody likes to talk about violence, death, tragedy or trauma but avoiding the subjects entirely -- as
some parents find much easier to do -- can have its own negative repercussions.   I'd like to refer you to a very brief article from the NYU Child Study Center so that you'll have a sense of how to respond when something bad happens.  http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/talking_children_about_difficult_subjects_illness_death_violence_disaster  More resources are available on the booklist and resource pages of this blog.
