Sweetser school-based clinicians

The Kittery School Department contracts with Sweetser, a community nonprofit mental health provider, to provide school-based behavioral health services for students and families that request their services. Early intervention and easy access can help keep students on track to achieve their educational and behavioral goals. Sweetser clinicians truly connect with children and work closely with teachers, school counselors, and other members of your child’s care team. These services are typically covered by MaineCare and most insurance plans.

Karen Walter and Christine Williams are the school-based behavioral health clinicians at Mitchell School. Please contact your child's school counselor to request a referral.

Karen Walter

Karen received her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Salem State University, and has experience in family, group, and individual therapy. She previously worked as an In-Home Family Therapist and Outpatient Therapist with Children’s Friend and Family Services, where she began to focus on working with young children. In her spare time Karen enjoys sea kayaking, hiking, cooking, and spending time with her family and pets.

You can contact Karen through the school or kwalter@sweetser.org. She accepts the following insurance plans: MaineCare, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Behavioral HealthCare Program (BHCP), Magellan, Northern Light, and United Behavioral Health/Optum. At this time, she does not yet accept TriCare and some private insurance plans. If your family has an insurance plan that Karen does not accept, it is possible that arrangements can be made for your child to meet with another Sweetser school-based clinician in this area.
